Ratios
Atlanta Falcon's quarterback Matt Ryan is considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. In his career with the Falcons, Ryan has thrown for almost 40,000 yards, 242 touchdowns and 114 interceptions. His touchdown to interception ratio is 2.12:1. Explain what this means.

Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is the term used to describe the dimensions of an image by comparing the width to the height and expressing it in ratio form. It’s written as a figure, in this form – width:height (width always comes first). Why does aspect ratio matter? It has to do with the relationship of the main subject to the sides of the frame, and the amount of empty space you end up with around the subject. Notice how much of the original image is cropped in the 4:3 ration.

With a little explanation, it is easy to understand what all the letters and numbers mean on the sidewall of a tire. A tire with a lower aspect ratio responds to lateral force more effectively than a tire with a higher aspect ratio. The aspect ratio affects steering stability. Generally, the shorter the sidewall, or the lower the aspect ratio, the less time it takes to transmit the steering input from the wheel to the tread. The result is quicker steering response. Aspect ratio also affects the tread contact patch. As a rule, a low profile tire produces a wider tread contact patch. This wider tread contact patch creates a stiffer footprint that reduces distortion and provides improved cornering traction. Aspect ratio also impacts ride. A low profile tire usually has a stiffer ride than the standard aspect ratio of 75 or more.
Speedometer accuracy
No speedometer can be 100 percent accurate. In fact, most manufacturers build speedometers so they fall within a fairly narrow tolerance range, no more than 1 percent to 5 percent too slow or too fast. As long as a car is maintained at factory specs, its speedometer should continue to register vehicle speed within this range. But, if a car is modified, its speedometer may need to be re-calibrated.
Changing tire size is one of the most common things car owners do that can affect speedometer accuracy. That’s because larger tires cover more ground in one complete revolution. Consider the example, your car comes with factory-installed tires that are 21.8 inches in diameter. That means the circumference of each tire is 68.5 inches. Now let’s say you want to replace the stock tires with new tires that are 24.6 inches in diameter. Each new tire has a circumference of 77.3 inches, which means it travels almost 10 inches farther with each complete revolution. This has a tremendous affect on your speedometer, which will now indicate a speed that is too slow by almost 13 percent. When your speedometer reads 60 miles per hour, your car will actually be traveling 67.7 miles per hour!

Aspect ratio and airplane wings
The ability of birds and airplanes to fly is related to the aspect ratio of their wings. Early wings were rectangular in shape, and the aspect ratio was the length of the wing compared to the width of the wing. Now wings are tapered and have a more complex pattern. As a result, the aspect ratio is determined differently.
Compare the aspect ratio for the wings of earlier model airplanes to those of more modern airplanes. Describe factors that must be considered with newer wings that were not used on older wings.
Discuss how the aspect ratio of a wing is related to the flight of airplanes and birds. Use the link below to help you get started with your answer.
